I wrote this song on my 1968 Gibson B-15, about two days after receiving the guitar from Elderly Instruments in Michigan. Ironic, since I would soon meet Frank and Scott, also both from Michigan. A kick ass guitar and a kick ass rhythm section, all from the same state! I put a DADGAD capo on the guitar and started strumming. Like many great songs, this one wrote itself. I didn't do very much. I simply ushered it into the world. The band put their arrangement on it, which is obviously amazing, to include Ralphie's psychedelic middle 8 and the triply drum/bass breakdown right after it. Pedro Aida took it all and turned into a psychedelic pop masterpiece. IMHO, of course. People ask what the song is about and I'm only half sure. I think one verse is about longing for the way things were in the past, let's say our college years. So looking backward a bit. Another verse is about looking forward: so the uncertainty of getting older. And the middle part/bridge is about trying to reconcile all that, perhaps through our favorite music. Because music is the one thing that can really define those eras in our lives. Also, there's a nod to both John Lennon and Noel Gallagher. Sorry. Had to do it.
lyrics
Oh, my soul
What happened to our rock and roll?
Things don't sound the way they used to...
Oh, my lord
How did we get so bored
Everybody sounds just like you...
Everybody's got a broken heartache
Everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody's gotta sinking feeling
Everybody's gonna lose their minds
Oh no: Oh, my soul...
Oh, my soul
Where did all of our time go
Things ain't been the same without you around
Oh, my lord
How did we get so bored
When we died inside we barely made a sound...
Wanna live in a dream
Wanna live in my record machine
Wanna live in a yellow submarine
