The title of this song, obviously, is a nod to all those old Bob Dylan songs back in the 60's -- John Thumb's Blues, Joni Mitchell's Ladies of the Canyon, and at least one epic week I spent at the Sunset Marquis in Los Angeles. etc. I think, after some amount of reflection, that this really is a "millennial love song," a term that a good friend coined when commenting on the chorus lyrics: "didn't wanna be your worst enemy, didn't wanna be your best frenemy..." In a way, that's right: the way we interact with each other, and interpret each other's actions are so different now. At least compared to my halcyon days. It's all about love in a world of celebrity reality t.v., psychiatric drugs, twitter feeds, and scientology. Along with Oh, My Soul, this song really defines this band.
lyrics
Stepped off the plane today
The California sun is wrecking my brain
Haven't got a place to stay
The ex-wife and her high-priced lawyer
Took my mansion away...
Didn't wanna be your worst enemy
Didn't wanna be your worst frenemy
I'm all alone, I'm by your side
It's true...all red-eyed and blue
Hey girl whatcha doin to me?
Running around LA with that Johnny Depp wannabe?
Is this how you wanna end the night?
His pretty face all messed up
And me and you in a fight?
REPEAT CHORUS
I gotta get out of the Hollywood Hills
Gotta get some new friends
Gotta get some more pills
You know its true: nobody love you like I do
Love you like I do...
